Description

This is a beautiful original non-dug coat size 1830 period artillery corps button. This one has great looking detail. It has the cannon on the front with the eagle perched on top of the barrel. Below the gun is a stack of three cannonballs. This one has the original shank present on the back of the button and you can read the backmark of "LEWIS & TOMES EXTRA RICH". Lewis and Tomes were importers and merchants of jewelry and buttons. The backmark book states they were in Birmingham, England and New York City. They say that the buttons were made in England were Lewis was a merchant from 1816 until 1833. They were located in New York from 1819 until 1826 under the name Lewis and Tomes. This is a more desirable backmark on this particular style of button. This is the style listed as variation of figure AY52 in Albert’s button book. It is a great looking 1-piece artillery coat button in non-excavated condition. ’
